Support for Status Quo at the BIC

Many of their pop peers have quit, split or been
voted out of office by bored audiences. But Bournemouths Beyond Belief remain remarkably Peter Shilton in their ability to carry on playing whilst the team sheet changes around them. Archaeological evidence dating back as far as January 1998 suggests they are now distinctively, the areas longest running covers band. The only draw back to Saturdays gig was the Ganders notoriously compact and bijou band stage. With all six members and an
assortment on mike stands and amplifiers, the surroundings lent the band
all the mobility and visuality of a sextet of musical mannequins in a
glass elevator.Musically much work has been done. It was the case in past times to utilise the bands brass section gratuitously. Now, the horn arrangements (Neil Allen; trumpet, Andy Magowan; Saxophones) are appropriate and economic. A cover of the Buzzcocks Ever Fallen In Love, where the brass duped the originals guitar figurines, bore this out. Garry Phillips (bass) and Mark Keniston (drums) have, in keeping with their rhythm section responsibilities, tidied up the endings (it used to be a competition to see who would finish last). And the discipline is also evident in new guitarist (Graham Froud) and singer/keyboardist Martin Bouchers leadership abilities. The set list ranged from Teardrop Explodes to Black Crows. Variety, as well as longevity, is Beyond Beliefs forte. Kevin Maidment reporting for the Bournemouth Daily Echo 21/10/96. |
